mind_combat

Walking around in the mind of another might seem easy when assisted by a mindwalker. However, the moment one wants to fight another, a brute and harsh truth presents itself. Physical action has no meaning in this Realm; your physical body is still at the location where the ritual to get you in the mindscape to begin with was performed.

But then how do the creatures in this mindscape fight? Through the force of personality and the mind.

The natural way to fight in a mindscape is by force of personality. A simple thaumaturgic ritual can be performed to access the power of the mind as well though. Once the nature of the Realm is clear, performing this ritual is instinctive. (Pay one willpower to access fighting through Wits+Occult or Intelligence+Occult).

The physical representation of the mind serves as a focus in these fights, granting an accuracy bonus of half the character's ability score from the ability most closely related to what he 'physically' does. Combat abilities are suitable, but there are various non-combat abilities that could be utilized as well, such as stealth. Using physical charms to enhance these actions increases the accuracy bonus by half the minimum ability requirement of the charm. (Add the scores together before dividing by 2, round up).

The attack targets willpower or one virtue. The result of the attack is compared to the target's MDV. The physical representation of the mind can serve as a focus on Parry MDV in the same manner it does to attacks, granting a defense bonus. Dodge MDV is not affected.

There is are no soak or damage ratings. The number of successes remaining after a successful attack are rolled as damage, and one point of damage is done for every two successes (rounded down).

If any virtue damage track is completed to zero, the target is ravished. This is a crippling effect that can only be healed by appropriate magic. A target who is ravished cannot be damaged at his virtues again for the remainder of the scene. Each virtue can only be ravished once and health tracks are replenished at the end of the scene.

Damaging willpower has no other effect than spending temporary willpower. Characters with no temporary willpower left cannot remain in the mindscape, though this is not true for creatures native or bound to the mindscape (they are simply forced to retreat to their own area). After a period of rest, all willpower damage due to mind combat is recovered, at a tax to the physical body… but a character has no way of knowing how badly his physical body is affected by this until he returns from the mindscape.

When all four virtues are ravished and temporary willpower is spent completely, the target falls into a coma. This, again, is not true for creatures native or bound to the mindscape, though they are not able to act within the mindscape for several days at least.

Characters who have their graces shaped can use shaping combat instead, making them incredibly dangerous in this setting.

Attacks

  • Charisma+Presence: Speed 4
  • Manipulation+Presence: Speed 6, -1 MDV for target
  • Charisma+Performance: Speed 5, only works in a flurry

After thaumaturgy

  • Wits+Occult: Speed 4
  • Intelligence+Occult: Speed 6, -1 MDV for target
